We use self-ligating brackets (the Damon System®) along with SureSmile® technology (robotically manufactured customized high-tech finishing archwires and improved diagnostic tools) not because they are the latest technology, but because they will give the best result we are able to deliver to you! We will continue to stay current with the latest in advancements and incorporate them into our practice if they will improve our treatment. Timing the beginning of treatment is a very important factor in the overall time in braces. For that reason, Dr. Mahaffey often will wait to begin treatment in many cases because not enough permanent teeth are in. Each child is different, but if we begin early, we will not necessarily finish sooner. We could just be waiting for teeth to grow while wearing braces. This increases your risk for decay or gingivitis. Timing your treatment right allows you the shortest treatment time possible.
 
Younger patients with many baby teeth sometimes require interceptive orthodontic treatment to correct crossbites, to help stop thumb-sucking habits, or to begin correcting a more severe orthodontic problem such as extreme crowding or a very large overbite. We are happy to help monitor your child's growth and decide if or when treatment is needed.
 
Adults also benefit from orthodontic treatment, and we enjoy working with our adult patients to achieve improved smile aesthetics, improved function and proper tooth position prior to veneers, implants, or other dental restorations. Adults especially appreciate the attention to detail and the emphasis on technology and reducing the time of treatment while maintaining optimum dental health.
